Job Description

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Building Inspector to support commercial and municipal construction projects throughout Orange County, California. This position will focus on conducting building inspections, verifying compliance with applicable building codes and approved construction documents, identifying deficiencies, and maintaining accurate inspection records throughout the construction process. The Building Inspector will work alongside construction management personnel, contractors, and other project stakeholders to help ensure construction activities meet established regulatory and quality standards.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on building inspection experience, a strong understanding of California building codes, and relevant International Code Council (ICC) certification. Experience inspecting public works facilities and ground-up commercial buildings is particularly valuable. This position requires a detail-oriented professional who can independently evaluate construction activities, communicate technical findings, and provide practical guidance when compliance issues arise.

Why Join Our Client?

Our client is a growing construction management firm supporting public-sector and commercial construction projects throughout Southern California. The company provides professional oversight and technical expertise to help project owners navigate construction requirements, maintain accountability, and achieve successful project outcomes.

This opportunity offers exposure to a variety of construction projects, particularly municipal facilities and ground-up building construction. As the company expands its project portfolio, it is building a network of qualified inspection professionals who can contribute to current and future assignments. While the initial opportunity is project-dependent, the company is open to establishing a long-term employment relationship with the right individual.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field inspections of commercial and municipal construction projects to verify compliance with applicable building codes, approved plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect structural, architectural, and general building construction activities at various stages of completion, identifying deficiencies and potential code violations.
  • Review construction drawings, permits, and supporting documentation to evaluate whether completed work meets applicable requirements.
  • Document inspection findings, prepare detailed reports, and maintain accurate records of deficiencies, corrective actions, and inspection outcomes.
  • Coordinate with construction managers, contractors, design professionals, and municipal representatives to communicate findings and resolve compliance-related issues.
  • Monitor corrective work and perform follow-up inspections to verify that identified deficiencies have been appropriately addressed.
  • Support project documentation and reporting requirements associated with public works construction, including records needed for regulatory review and project closeout.
Requirements
  • Professional experience performing building inspections on commercial, institutional, or public works construction projects.
  • Current International Code Council (ICC) certification relevant to commercial building inspection.
  • Working knowledge of the California Building Standards Code and applicable building inspection procedures.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and structural drawings, construction specifications, and relevant code requirements.
  • Experience identifying construction deficiencies, documenting inspection findings, and verifying corrective actions.
  • Strong written communication and documentation skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and electronic reporting.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings effectively with contractors, construction management personnel, and municipal stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience inspecting municipal or public-sector facilities, including libraries, fire stations, community centers, or similar institutional buildings.
  • Experience with ground-up commercial building construction.
  • Prior experience working for a third-party inspection firm, municipal building department, or construction management consulting organization.
  • Additional ICC certifications covering multiple building inspection disciplines.
